Home School Preschool - Nothing New

Until recently, all children received a home school preschool education. Only in the past decade has public preschool education become the norm instead of something reserved for children whose parents could afford it. Home schooling a preschool age child is not difficult and allows a less rigid curriculum to be taught.

Regulations

Each state has different regulations regarding home schooling children. Some states do not oversee preschool programs in the child's home. States with daycare provider laws may have regulations requiring owners of these facilities to provide approved preschool learning programs. Unlike a daycare facility, a private home may encourage preschoolers to explore subjects more deeply, interact, ask questions about a subject, and proceed at their own pace.

Preschool Programs

There are many preschool programs and curriculums available to the public. With some research and effort, any parent can design an appropriate preschool program themselves. Art projects that use shapes can be easily crafted from items that are already in the home. Early math skills can be learned while helping cook a meal, set a table or putting groceries away. Knowing what the curriculum is for preschool age children will allow a personalized program to be designed. If a child demonstrates talent in a specific area, a home school preschool program can be implemented allowing those talents to be explored. State and county preschool programs rarely encourage academic or artistic talents.

Basic Preschool Requirements

Preschool programs are not as stringent especially concerning how much material needs to be covered per year.

• Home school preschool programs should include reading readiness that will teach the child the letters of the alphabet, how to print those letters and how to print their name. Reading readiness can also include the phonetic sounds that each letter makes in addition to recognizing objects that start with a specific letter.
• Basic science skills should be included. Science concepts are easy to teach using items that are most likely on hand. Heat, temperature, animal and plant life cycles and wind are just a few of the basic science concepts that are easily taught at home.
• Recognizing numbers, counting and easy math concepts are very easy to teach.
• Learning the various colors and shapes at home can be fun and learning them at home may allow an in-depth exploration. Mixing paint colors at a public preschool may result in a reprimand but mixing paints at home to see what colors are produced may result in praise and work of art work lovingly displayed.
• Another consideration is that social development skills can be faith-based instead of curriculum based if the preschooler is home schooled.

Art and Music

There are two things that every preschooler loves, art projects and music. Home school preschool programs can easily involve both music and physical activity. Movement, like hopping, skipping and jumping in time with music is just one way to burn off excess energy. Learning to dance ballet or jazz and playing a basic instrument while singing are a few ways to incorporate physical activity and music into learning. Art projects can cross all curriculum borders. Art projects can teach colors, shapes, letter recognition in addition to encouraging creativity. Unlike regulated academic programs, home school programs allow children to explore and express their creative natures.

Early childhood academic experiences in a loving, nurturing environment may only be possible through home school preschool programs. Early home-based education will be one on one and can be personalized to meet both the academic and social needs of the child.
