Preschool Games

Preschool games can be active, quiet, loud, messy, and need to be fun. Choosing games for a preschooler does not mean you have to spend lots of money, as many of the best children's games are played with simple toys.

Ball Games

Playing with balls is always fun. Tossing hard plastic balls into a laundry basket is a game even a toddler will enjoy. Making animal shaped hoops for preschool games of toss using fabric or Styrofoam balls is easily done at home. Toss and catch can be played inside and out using a variety of balls. Balls of various sizes, textures and colors add challenges to catch and throwing games. Children develop fine and gross motor skills while playing with balls. Catching and throwing an object requires eye-hand coordination skills.

Board Games

Board Games for Preschoolers

You can purchase preschool board games including Chutes and Ladders and Candyland. Board games are also easy to make at home using paper and markers. Games made at home can be personalized to include photos of family members or pets.

Matching games using outlines of items on a sheet of paper allow children to place the matching shape on top. Simple board games using homemade dice with pictures instead of dots provides independent or group play.

Making up a game specific to a theme or holiday is also very simple. Find the Puppy, for example, could include places around the child's house, neighborhood and their family members. Games of this type might include funny things that a puppy or family member might do. Landing on a square with the picture of a sibling could mean the child draws an action card. The card may contain images with words telling the child to jump, or hop, or play peek-a-boo. Once a parent gets started on these types of activities, they could run out of room for all their child's games.

Memory Games

Memory games help improve a child's capacity for memorization. You can purchase these types of preschool games, but they are also easily made at home. Index cards are a good size to use when making a memory game for children. Two identical pictures are all that is required. Once a child masters the ability to match two identical pictures the cards can be changed to include one picture card with a corresponding word card.

Mix Up

Some of the most enjoyable preschool games involve funny situations or pictures. Gluing a picture to a card and cutting it into three strips children can use them to create mixed up pictures. Putting dad's face on mom's body with bird legs will have a child laughing while learning.

Dress up is another fun game that can be played with outgrown or discarded clothes. Shirts, skirts, pants, mismatched socks and hats allow children to play mixed up dress up. This game can be played independently or with others. Cards can be made that show a few items that the child has to look for and put on.

Playing these types of games children can improve their dexterity in addition to learning to follow directions. A variation could include a picture equation, such as "Hat + shirt + sock = smile" or "skirt + hat + gloves = frown". Using these types of equations helps a preschooler prepare for math equations in a silly and enjoyable way.

Making fun preschool games lets children have fun while learning. Seeing the world through a child's eye will provide hours of enjoyment.
