Using preschool worksheets to reinforce a lesson is a somewhat debated topic. On one end there are those who believe that it is very effective in helping the preschooler retain teachings while others believe that preschoolers benefit more from hands on activities. I'm in the middle on this one and I firmly believe that it depends on the child.
This page will be updated with any preschool worksheets that I add which should be on a daily basis.
Some children, (mostly girls from my experience), actually enjoy doing worksheets and benefit from them. All children will enjoy and learn from them on some level if you do them together and make it fun. At this age, anything they do with mommy and receive praise for is enjoyable. I would not go so far as to print off a stack of worksheets and expect my preschooler to do them for fun. However, whenever you supply them with worksheets, more often than not, they will come back and ask for more.
The key is to acknowledge their limits and do not push them. Find fun ways to correct them and do not use them as drills, instead use them as supplements.
The areas that preschoolers can use worksheets in are:
Auditory Processing Preschool Worksheets
These worksheets are designed to help the children correctly follow simple one and two step directions. It will be very helpful in preparing your preschooler for kindergarten worksheets. Being able to underline, circle and rewrite objects and words will be a vital skill that they will need to succeed in most kindergarten classes. They will also need to know how to mark circles, (fill in bubbles), trace, repeat, place a X on, color certain areas certain colors and so on. It would great if they could use worksheets to practice this at home.
Handwriting Worksheets for Preschoolers
I don't think anyone would argue that preschoolers need to practice their writing skills. Specifically, they should be able to write upper and lower case letters, their numbers, their first and last name and eventually some simple words. By the time they are just a few weeks into kindergarten, they will be writing simple words from a word list.
Here are some Practice Letter Writing Worksheets for your preschoolers!
Phonemic Awareness
Preschoolers need to be aware that there are letters, and each of these letters have sounds that when combined, make a word. They then will learn that when you combine these words, they form sentences. Using Worksheets to allow your preschooler to visually see the beginning, middle, and ending letters in words is a great way to teach these basic skills.
Preschool Science Worksheets
Science is so fun at this age. Using worksheets to display how the caterpillar turns in a butterfly and have them color it or the life of a tree, parts of a flower, discovering the body, nonliving vs. living things are great and fun preschool science themes that can be taught using worksheets.
Preschool Math Worksheets
Beginning with simply learning how to write the numbers one through twenty and then how to spell the words for the numbers one through ten you can eventually start to teach your child how to group numbers, or simple addition and subtraction skills.
Math Worksheets For Writing Numbers One Through Ten
Preschool Spelling Worksheets
These worksheets are simple ways to help your preschooler learn to write the simple sight words they will be expected to know in kindergarten. Take one and let them try to study it each day. Make for sure that you start with the basics before you advance to words that may have silent letters in them - or letters that do not sound the way they should. Give them a test at the end and be sure to give them plenty of smiley faces for their effort! I think most people think that this is an advanced skill but they can do it!
Preschool Worksheets On History
Make sure your preschoolers knows about the United States Flag, The Statue of Liberty, The Pledge of Allegiance and maybe a little about the state and city in which they live in.
